Family Roles and Occupations: A Complementary Perspective
The intricate connection between family dynamics and employment has long been a subject of fascination and research. Understanding family roles and their relationship with occupations offers valuable insights into the complexities of life in the modern world.
Working From Home and Family Responsibilities
During the COVID-19 pandemic, the relationship between occupations, family roles, and working from home (WFH) became a pressing topic. A study from PLOS ONE found that WFH was more prevalent among highly educated and high-status employees, with gender and occupational segregation playing a significant role in the ability to work from home. Women in female-dominated occupations were less often in a position to WFH, suggesting that gender and occupational structure intersect to influence family and work dynamics.
Family Support and Occupational Therapy
Occupational therapy (OT) interventions require significant time and energy from families. A study exploring the perspectives of parents and occupational therapists identified nine key principles to build the capacities of families without overburdening them. To facilitate engagement, occupational therapists need to listen to and communicate effectively with parents, develop a trusting relationship, acknowledge parents' expertise, consider the needs of all family members, and employ shared decision-making.
Gender, Occupational Segregation, and Employment Opportunities
Occupational segregation can create gender disparities in the distribution of flexible work schedules and the ability to work from home. Women are more likely to work from home if they are single or do not live together with children, whereas men are predominantly working from home in rare households in which men are sole or primary carers and/or housemakers. The tendency of men and women to work in different occupations can lead to well-known phenomena such as gendered wage differences and can also influence the ability to work from home during a pandemic.
Family Capacity Building and Service Provision
In family-centered practice, occupational therapists need to acknowledge parents' expertise, consider the needs of all family members, and employ shared decision-making. To facilitate engagement, therapists should listen to and communicate effectively with parents, develop a trusting relationship with them, and clarify their possible role in the intervention. In this way, occupational therapy services can be offered in a way that helps build families' capacities without overburdening them.
In summary, the complex interplay between family roles and occupations is a dynamic and multifaceted issue. Understanding factors such as WFH, occupational therapy, occupational segregation, and family capacity building can provide valuable insights into the lives of individuals and families navigating the modern world.
