    Study Notes

    Ventilation in Factories

    • In cases where meeting ventilation opening requirements is impossible due to adjacent buildings and height, the Inspector may order the manager to provide additional ventilation using roof ventilators or mechanical means.
    • Mechanical ventilation must supply at least six times the cubic capacity of the workroom in an hour, distributed evenly without dead air-pockets or undue draughts.

    Special Climate Conditions

    • In regions where outside air temperatures exceed 35°C with a wet-bulb temperature of 25°C or below (15th March-15th July), the Inspector may order the manager to cool outside air by passing it through water sprays using unit-type evaporative air coolers or central air washing plants.

    Rules for Safety Officers

    • A safety officer must be conversant with hazardous properties of chemicals, their permissible limit values, and certification of safety in working in confined spaces.
    • They must also be familiar with current techniques of sampling and analysis of environmental contaminants and able to arrive at a reliable conclusion regarding safety.

    Qualifications for Ventilation System Designers

    • A designer must have a degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering or equivalent and at least 7 years of experience in designing, fabricating, installing, testing ventilation systems, and other ancillary equipment.

    Definitions

    • "Act" refers to the Factories Act, 1948.
    • "Artificial humidification" means introducing moisture into the air of a room by artificial means, except for unavoidable steam or water vapour escape during manufacturing processes.
    • "Degrees" (of temperature) refers to the centigrade scale.
    • "Hygrometer" means an accurate wet and dry bulb hygrometer conforming to prescribed conditions.
    • "Manager" means the person responsible to the occupier for the working of the factory.
