    Study Notes

Introduction to NUSC 1P12: Nursing & Health Promotion

    • NUSC 1P12 is a course focused on philosophical and theoretical concepts of nursing and health, professional standards, Canadian healthcare system, primary healthcare, health promotion, and social determinants of health.

    Conceptualizations of Health

    • Health is derived from the Old English word "hoelth," meaning wholeness of body.
    • Health is more than the absence of disease, and someone with a chronic condition can still have health.
    • WHO defines health as "a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity" (WHO, 1947).
    • Health is seen as a resource for everyday life, not just the objective of living (WHO, 1984).

    Classifications & Dimensions of Health

    • Health as Stability: maintenance of physiological, logical, functional, and social norms.
    • Health as Actualization: the actualization of human potential, often using 'health' and 'wellness' interchangeably.
    • Health as Resource: capacities to fulfill roles, meet demands, and engage in activities of everyday living.

    Approaches to Healthcare

    • Medical Approach: focused on curing, health problems pathologized, and medical intervention emphasized to restore health.
    • Behavioral Approach: shifted focus from medical model to a more behavioral perspective, emphasizing individual responsibility for health and health promotion strategies.
    • Socio-environmental Approach: acknowledges social context and environment beyond individual control, and focuses on social determinants of health.

    Social Determinants of Health (SDOH)

    • SDOH are the non-medical factors that influence health outcomes, such as income, education, employment, and social environments.
    • The study of SDOH deals with three key problems: understanding societal factors that shape health, societal forces that shape the quality and distribution of SDOH, and the difficulty of addressing SDOH through public policy.
    • The social determinants of health framework includes factors such as Indigenous ancestry, healthcare services, disability, housing, early life, immigrant status, education, income, and employment.

    Strategies to Influence Health Determinants

    • Health promotion strategies include building healthy public policy, creating supportive environments, strengthening community action, developing personal skills, and reorienting health services.
    • Disease prevention strategies include primary, secondary, tertiary, and quaternary prevention levels of care.

    Population Health Model

    • The population health model explores four major questions: who to act with, how to take action, what to take action on, and why take action to improve health.
