A native of General Santos City, New graduated from the Philippine High School for the Arts and the University of the Philippines College of Fine Arts. His work has garnered him a number of accolades and awards, including the 2005 Metrobank Art Awards, the 2009 Ateneo Art Awards, a nomination for the 2011 Signature Art Prize in Singapore, the 2012 CCP 13 Artists Award, and the 2014 Metrobank Foundation Award.

  1. One of the most prominent female artists in Philippine arts circles today, work brings together advocacy and art. Luna is a graduate of the University of the Philippines’ Fine Arts program, focusing on visual art. She also received a Chevening Award, allowing her to take a masters in Art and Education at the University of London in the UK. Her work has been exhibited in the CCP, Vargas Museum, and Lopez Memorial Museum, among others. In addition, she has also been featured in the Aichi Triennale, Singapore Biennale, Beijing Binnale, and Le Festival International des textiles Extra Ordinaires.

LINE

It is the most striking art element that catches the eyes. A sensation created by visible wavelengths of light caught in a prism. A mixture of organic and sythetic substances “pigments” such as dye and paint.

COLOR/COLOUR

It is the degree of lightness and darkness of a color. In music it is called PITCH - highness or lowness of a tone. VALUE suggests an atmosphere or mood.

PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN/ART

ELEMENTS IN A WORK OF ART SHOULD HAVE A RELATIONSHIP WITH ONE ANOTHER. A WELL-PROPORTIONED SHAPE IS PLEASING TO THE EYE. “IN THEATRICAL OR STAGE PLAY, THE BACKDROP AND THE PROPS MUST BE APPROPRIATE TO THE PERFORMERS WITHOUT OUTSHINING THEM.”

Music

5 elements of dance movement?

Banga, Bendayan, Lumagen, Uyaoy, Salisid The Banga dance is being performed by mainly female dancers. They wear a traditional Kalinga clothes which is weave clothing and a 5-8 pots placed on their head. The dance is accompanied by a music played by flute and bamboos being hit in the iron pots.

Cordillera

They are known for their mysticism, royalty, and beauty which are evident in their music and dances. Accompanied by the agong and kulintang, Filipino Muslim dance is marked by intricate hand and arm movement along with shimmering costumes

MUSLIM DANCE

takes its name from the bells worn on the ankles of the Muslim princess. Perhaps one of the oldest of truly Filipino dances, the Singkil recounts the epic legend of the "Darangan" of the Maranao people of Mindanao. This epic, written sometime in the 14th century, tells the fateful story of Princess Gandingan, who was caught in the middle of a forest during an earthquake caused by the diwatas, or fairies or nymph of the forest.

MALAKAS AT MAGANDA, KADAL BLELAH, BINAYLAN Binaylan is a Higaonon and Agusanon Manobo tribal dance that depicts the movement of a hawk, a hen, and her banog or baby chicks. The tribe killed the sacred and powerful hawk which tried to capture one of the chicks.

HERNANDO R. OCAMPO

(May 30, 1892 – April 24, 1972) was one of the most important artists in the history of painting in the Philippines. Amorsolo was a portraitist and painter of rural Philippine landscapes. He is popularly known for his craftsmanship and mastery in the use of light.

Fernando Amorsolo y Cueto

(July 7, 1937 - September 8, 1996) has been acclaimed by critics as a major Filipino artist of the 20th century. Olmedo created a body of works that utilizes the expressionist technique of distortion to portray the inner torment experienced by modern man.

Onib Olmedo

(June 3, 1931 – May 11, 1995) was a Filipino abstract artist and a National Artist of the Philippines awardee. Joya was a printmaker, painter, mixed media artist, and a former dean of the University of the Philippines' College of Fine Arts.

Jose T. Joya

(March 1, 1931 – May 9, 2005) was a Filipino painter of Chinese descent and was a National Artist for Visual Arts.He first attained prominence in the Philippine arts scene in the 1960s with a distinct style that fused influences from cubism, surrealism and expressionism

Realism

As its name suggests, the emphasis is on the act of painting: the character of the brushwork and pigments themselves. Artists working in this style don't try to hide what was used to create the painting by smoothing out texture or marks left in the paint by a brush or other tool, such as a palette knife.

Painterly

emerged in the 1880s in Europe, where artists such as Claude Monet sought to capture light, not through the detail of realism, but with gesture and illusion.

Impressionism

The two styles differ in some ways. Expressionists, including Edvard Munch, sought to convey the grotesque and horror in everyday life, often with hyper-stylized brushwork and horrific images, such as he used to great effect in his painting "The Scream."

Expressionism and fauvism

despite their novel use of color, sought to create compositions that depicted life in an idealized or exotic nature.

Fauvists

is about painting the essence of a subject as the artist interprets it, rather than the visible details. A painter may reduce the subject to its dominant colors, shapes, or patterns.

Abstraction

developed in the late 1960s and '70s in reaction to Abstract Expressionism. Some artists copy photographs by projecting them onto a canvas to accurately capture precise details.

Photorealism

Can be vertical, horizontal, curved or jagged. Examples: roads, sunsets, bridges.

Line

Two-dimensional representation of objects. Examples: silhouetted photographs of birds.

Shape

Three-dimensional representation of objects, usually through the use of lighting and shadows.

Form

The use of lighting to bring out details of an object, making it easy to see whether a surface is smooth or soft.

Texture

The use of repetition to create an interesting photo. Examples: photos of gardens or flowers.

Pattern

Using warm or cool colors to set a mood.

Color

Either negative or positive space can be used to make a statement. Often seen when using the rule of thirds.

Space

Western photographers, mostly from Europe, pioneered photography in the Philippines. From 1840s to 1890s there were workshops in taking photographs and came the first photo studios

A portrait photograph is a picture of a person or animal that shows an emotional connection.
