    Study Notes

    Facial Nerve

    • The facial nerve emerges from the stylomastoid foramen and divides into five terminal branches after passing through the parotid gland.
    • The branches are:
      • Posterior auricular, to the occipital belly of occipitofrontalis muscle and muscles around the ear
      • Temporal branch
      • Zygomatic branch
      • Buccal (upper and lower) branches
      • Mandibular branch
      • Cervical branch

    Blood Supply of the Face

    • Arteries of the face:
      • Facial artery: originates from the external carotid artery, passes through the digastric triangle, and terminates by giving the angular artery
      • Lacrimal part: arises from the posterior crest and adjacent part of the orbital surface of the lacrimal bone
      • Buccinator: originates from maxilla above three molars, mandible below three molars, and pterygomandibular raphe
    • Nerve supply of the face:
      • Temporal branch of the facial nerve (supplies the lacrimal part)
      • Facial nerve (upper and lower buccal branches) supplies the buccinator

    Nerve Supply of the Face

    • Sensory nerve supply:
      • Trigeminal nerve (divided into ophthalmic, maxillary, and mandibular divisions)
      • Great auricular nerve (C2, 3) of the cervical plexus
    • Motor nerves of the face:
      • Facial nerve (mixed nerve, motor, sensory, and containing parasympathetic)
      • Branches:
        • Ascending palatine artery
        • Tonsillar artery
        • Submental artery
        • Glandular branches

    Arteries of the Face

    • Facial artery: originates from the external carotid artery, passes through the digastric triangle, and terminates by giving the angular artery
    • Supraorbital artery
    • Supratrochlear artery
    • Lateral nasal branch
    • Septal branch
    • Angular artery
    • Superior labial branch
    • Inferior labial branch

Veins of the Scalp and Face

    • Superficial temporal vein
    • Maxillary vein
    • Cavernous sinus
    • Supratrochlear vein
    • Supra-orbital vein
    • Posterior facial vein
    • External jugular vein
    • Anterior facial vein
    • Emissary veins
    • Deep facial vein
    • Subclavian vein
    • Pterygoid plexus
    • Common facial vein
    • Internal jugular vein
    • Connections with cavernous sinus
    • Facial vein: begins at the medial angle of the eye, runs downwards and backwards behind the facial artery, and leaves the face to enter the neck.
