What’s the purpose of an extra oral examination?

To identify any undiagnosed conditions, which may include malignancies

Which areas should be looking at during an EO exam and why is this important?

Upper face: Forehead, eyes, cheeks/cheeksbones, upper part of the nose. Lower face: lower part of the nose, chin, lips, general symmetry. Looking for significant asymmetry— may have an underlying cause, check medical history with patient. Any unexplained lesions- patient will not be able to see lesions on side of face which may be malignancy. Any bruising, swelling, excessive sweating may be an indication of systemic disease. Anything on the lips/corner of the mouth, may be herpes, avoid treatment. May be angular cheilitis which is a fungal infection. Sqamous cell carcinoma may be present as a red blister or white patch

What will you generally be looking for during the EO exam and how will you do this?

Any swelling, tenderness, abnormality We need to PALPATE (feel) for swelling, tenderness and lymph gland enlargement Lymphadenopathy: Disease of the Lymph glands, often recognised as swelling and tenderness

What’s the best operator position for carrying out a lymph node/TMJ examination?

<p>Stand behind patient; Ensure patient is relaxed; Their head should be slightly forward, make sure chin is not tipped upward; use the pads of the fingertips in an on/off motion, Examine all nodes.
