The roots of English literature can be traced back over a thousand years to ancient Anglo Saxon poetry known as Beowulf. This epic poem from AD700 documents early Germanic culture and has been recognized as one of the most influential pieces of Old English Literature. Christopher Marlowe and William Shakespeare were poets who flourished during Queen Elizabeth I's reign.
