The Skeletal System

Human Skeleton: Vertebrae

The vertebral column, commonly referred to as the spine, serves as the primary support structure for the body. It comprises 33 vertebrae, subdivided into five categories: cervical, thoracic, lumbar, sacral, and coccygeal.

• Cervical Vertebrae (7): Located in the neck, these vertebrae are specialized for flexibility and support of the head.

• Lumbar Vertebrae (5): Found in the lower back, these vertebrae are the largest and strongest in the vertebral column, providing support for the upper body.
• Sacral Vertebrae (5, fused into 1): Located between the lumbar vertebrae and the coccygeal vertebrae, the sacral vertebrae form the sacrum, which connects to the pelvis.
• Coccygeal Vertebrae (4, fused into 1): Found at the base of the spine, these vertebrae form the coccyx, sometimes referred to as the tailbone.

Human Skeleton: Skull

The skull, also known as the cranium, is the most complex bone structure in the human body. It is composed of 22 individual bones that form the protective casing for the brain and house the sensory organs.

• Cranial Bones: These bones include the frontal bone, parietal bones, temporal bones, occipital bone, sphenoid bone, and ethmoid bone.
• Facial Bones: These bones include the nasal bone, maxilla, palatine bone, zygomatic bone, lacrimal bone, inferior nasal concha, vomer, and mandible.
