  • Characterized by the scaling off of tissues in layers
  • Caused by an epidermal toxin produced by S. aureus
  • The toxin is produced at the skin and carried by the bloodstream to the epidermis
  • The toxin causes a split in a cellular layer, separating the outer layer of the epidermis from the underlying tissue
