Excretion
- Excretion is the process of removing waste materials from the body.
- It is a characteristic of all living things.
- Excretion does not mean getting rid of all waste materials only waste materials truly inside the body.
- This happens even for only a short while.
- Waste travels through the body from the mouth to the anus in the digestive system, but this doesn't count as excretion
What Excretion Includes?
- Excretion includes all waste substances that cells create (ex. CO2)
- The body produces more waste than needed so removal is necessary.
- Getting rid of feces is not excretion.
Urea
- Urea is a waste substance made in liver cells.
- Protein is broken down into smaller molecules, these molecules are transported into bloodstream & to the liver.
- The liver changes these molecules into urea.
- Urea is poisonous if it builds up.
- The urea is removed from the blood by the kidneys.
- This kidney system is also known as the renal system.
