Study Notes
Hindi is a West Central Indo-Aryan language primarily spoken in Northern India. It has its roots in Sanskrit, with the earliest forms of the written script being based on Devanagari script. Over time, it developed into several dialects including Khariboli, Braj Bhasha, Awadhi, Baghelia, Bundeli, Chattisgarhi, Haryanvi, Rajasthani, Maharastri, Gujarati, Malvai, Punjabi, Marwari, amongst others.
The modern Hindi alphabet consists of 47 letters, which can be combined to form words using a variety of compound characters called matras or vowels. These characters are put together like a puzzle to create meaningful sentences. However, there was not always such uniformity; early scripts would include many more consonants, allowing for complex grammatical structures, while later ones reduced this complexity by removing some characters from regular usage. In addition, special diacritic marks were used, known as tatsam and tamalik, to represent specific sounds not present in standard pronunciations. But today, Hindi mostly follows Devanagari script due to historical reasons.
In conclusion, Hindi's evolution through various stages resulted in a well-defined set of rules governing its structure and representation. Despite changes over time, the current Hindi script remains largely consistent, enabling effective communication between speakers of different regions with varying levels of linguistic competence.
