English Literature

English literature encompasses the body of written works in the English language. It includes poetry, drama, prose fiction, nonfiction, and many other forms. Early History of English Literature

During this time, John Dryden became the leading figure of the theater after his return from exile, while Aphra Behn established the first professional women's company and began writing plays herself.

Eighteenth Century

By the eighteenth century, English literature had acquired a range in form and spirit that has hardly varied since. Poets like Alexander Pope, Jonathan Swift, William Cowper, Robert Burns, and John Keats focused on themes like love, friendship, nature, political issues, and personal experiences.

Victorian Era

The Victorian era produced some of the world's greatest novels and poets, including those by Charles Dickens, Emily Bronte, and Alfred Lord Tennyson. The era is notable for its thematic diversity, moving from gothic horror in Mary Shelley's Frankenstein to social commentary in Dickens' Bleak House, and from romantic fantasy in Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland to naturalist realism in George Eliot's Silas Marner.

Modern Period

From the late nineteenth century to the present day, English literature has continued to evolve with different styles and genres, reflecting the changing times and society. Notable modern authors include James Joyce, Virginia Woolf, Aldous Huxley, Agatha Christie, and Harold Pinter.
