Evidence Types and Reliability
- Anecdotal evidence is the least reliable form of evidence, based on personal experiences, observations, or opinions, and is prone to bias.
- Observational studies observe subjects over time without manipulating variables and are more scientific than anecdotal evidence but can still contain bias and confounding factors.
- Randomized Controlled Trials (RCTs) are experimental studies that randomly assign subjects to treatment and control groups, offering higher reliability than observational studies by reducing bias.
- Meta-analyses are systematic reviews of multiple RCTs or other studies. By combining results, they offer a more comprehensive and highly reliable view of the evidence.
Evidence Pyramid and Quality
- The higher a piece of evidence is on the pyramid, the more effort is put into controlling biases (such as selection bias or observer bias), resulting in more trustworthy evidence.
- Higher levels of the pyramid demand stricter scientific methodology, increasing the accuracy of conclusions.
- Research at higher levels typically undergoes rigorous peer review, confirming quality and validity.
