Study Notes

European imperialism was a period of expansion by various European powers into different parts of Africa, Asia, North America, South America, Australia, Oceania, and some islands in Antarctica from the late fifteenth century until after World War II. This period saw many changes in cultures throughout the world, including significant impacts on the indigenous peoples who were subjected to extensive rule under colonial governments. Here we will explore these impacts along with other aspects of this era, such as decolonization, colonization, conquest, and exploitation.

Impact on Indigenous Populations

The arrival of Europeans led to major changes for native people all around the globe. In Africa, they introduced diseases like smallpox which spread rapidly among the indigenous population, killing millions. They also began farming, building homes, roads, and churches in African societies, altering their culture and traditions forever. Similarly, in North America, European settlers brought diseases and forced assimilation upon the Native Americans, leading to massive deaths and cultural changes.

In Australia, where much of the land had previously been owned by Aboriginal Australians, the British government granted vast tracts of it to white settlers without any consent being sought from its original owners. As a result, the Australian government organized military expeditions against aborigines between 1804-6 and again between 1828-30, causing great suffering amongst them. These events illustrate how deeply colonial forces affected indigenous populations worldwide.

Decolonization

Decolonization is the process through which colonies gain independence from foreign control. It started following WWI when countries like France and Britain fought each other over territories in Africa; eventually they agreed on dividing Africa between themselves according to what came out best in terms of trade and resources. By 1970s most African countries became independent states except for Rhodesia, Namibia, Swaziland, Lesotho, Botswana, Mauritius and Seychelles. However, even today there remain issues related to self-determination and sovereignty due to decades old legacies left behind by imperialist practices.

Colonization

Colonialism refers to one country controlling another politically, economically and culturally while making use of its natural resources, labor, customs etc. Over time, colonial governments imposed taxes on local products and industries; sometimes they took ownership rights over land belonging to locals; often times they established laws based on western norms rather than those followed traditionally within communities. Additionally, there were cases where entire tribes faced extinction because of policies implemented during colonial rule. Today these legacies continue to impact life on earth - environmentally, socially, politically and economically.

Conquest & Exploration

Explorers traveled to distant lands in search of new sources of wealth, territory, raw materials, or to establish trading relationships with natives. Some explorations were peaceful while others involved violence towards local populations whom they considered inferior. During these conquests, empires seized land, expanded borders, imposed taxes, enforced labor, imposed religious beliefs and created political institutions. Navigation techniques improved dramatically as well enabling exploration across larger distances.

Exploitation

Imperialism allowed wealthy nations to benefit from the economic surplus generated by less developed regions through resource extraction and monetary transactions. Resources like gold, silver, rubber, ivory, spices, tea, opium, cotton, tobacco, sugar cane, cacao beans, coffee beans were extracted from colonized areas at low cost using cheap slave labour. Through taxation, tariffs and import duties on goods produced overseas, private corporations gained enormous profits from commerce, ultimately resulting in the creation of global consumer markets.

In conclusion, European imperialism has left lasting effects globally – affecting indigenous populations including their health, culture, and lifestyle; bringing about the process of decolonization with varying success rates depending on location; imposing rules over colonized territories; allowing exploited resources to flow back home; creating global markets via business exploration trips; constantly leaving behind environmental damages; and surviving today as a footnote to history despite persistent efforts toward change.
