What is the primary source of 99.9% ethylene for the NAOU-1797 unit, and what is the alternative source in case of pipeline issues?
What is the primary source of 99.9% ethylene for the NAOU-1797 unit, and what is the alternative source in case of pipeline issues?
The primary source is the Chevron Pipeline, and the alternative source is the ethylene unit EU-1592.
Describe the purpose of E-100 (Ethylene Preheater) in the context of the incoming pipeline ethylene.
Describe the purpose of E-100 (Ethylene Preheater) in the context of the incoming pipeline ethylene.
E-100 heats the pipeline ethylene using 100 psig steam to reverse the auto refrigeration caused by the pressure drop, preventing liquid ethylene from entering the compressors.
Why is it critical to prevent liquid or liquid phase process fluid from entering the C-120A/B compressors?
Why is it critical to prevent liquid or liquid phase process fluid from entering the C-120A/B compressors?
Liquid can severely damage the C-120A/B valves and other critical components, threatening cylinder integrity and potentially causing a loss of containment.
What components are separated from the vapor ethylene in D-110 (Charge Gas Compressor Suction Drum), and where are these components routed?
What components are separated from the vapor ethylene in D-110 (Charge Gas Compressor Suction Drum), and where are these components routed?
Explain how the feed stream to D-110 (Charge Gas Compressor Suction Drum) is created, naming at least two sources of ethylene.

Study Notes
- In the Feed Section, vaporized ethylene is separated from liquid after heated pipeline ethylene and recycle ethylene combine.
- Normal Alpha Olefins Unit 1797 (NAOU-1797) mainly gets 99.9% ethylene from the Chevron Pipeline through the Ethylene Metering Skid.
- If the pipeline has issues which cause extended ethylene quality problems, Chevron Pipeline personnel can switch NAOU-1797 ethylene feed directly from the ethylene unit EU-1592.
- Pipeline ethylene goes through a pressure valve as it crosses battery limits, causing a pressure drop and auto refrigeration (cooling/condensing) of the ethylene.
- Ethylene begins to condense into liquid below 65°F.
- Ethylene flows to the tube side of E-100 (Ethylene Preheater) and is heated by 100 psig steam on the shell side to reverse auto refrigeration and reduce the risk of sending liquid ethylene into C-120A/B (Charge Gas Compressors).
- Ethylene make-up flows to E-750 (Regeneration Gas Cooler).
- Liquid or liquid phase process fluid may severely damage the C-120A/B valves and other critical components, possibly threatening cylinder integrity and causing loss of containment.
- Preheated ethylene mixes with recycle gas (mostly ethylene) from D-330 (H.P. Recycle K.O. Drum) and spillback from C-120A/B and C-360A/B (Booster/Recycle Compressors), and is then routed to D-110 (Charge Gas Compressor Suction Drum).
- Heavier components (C4+) are separated from the vapor ethylene, routed from the bottom of D-110 to T-340 (Caustic Wash Vapor Scrubber).
- The ethylene vapor goes to the first stage of C-120A/B.
