The Establishment of ASEAN and its Success in Achieving Development and Peace in Southeast Asia
- ASEAN's motto is "One Vision, One Identity, One Community."
- With the shift of the global economic center to Asia in the 1990s, the development of some ASEAN member countries accelerated.
- Countries outside the region dialogue with it and implemented the ASEAN Way such as the ASEAN Regional Forum and Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC).
- The ASEAN is said to have changed the structure of the global economy and institutional development in regions.
- There are still internal shortcomings and challenges within each member country and between each other such as sustainable development, gender inclusiveness, external perspective, and having a larger global role in ASEAN.
- The Association of Southeast Asian Nations or ASEAN consists of ten countries which include Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam.
- It was established in Bangkok, Thailand on August 8, 1967 through the ASEAN Declaration or Bangkok Declaration.
- The recognized founders are Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand who wanted to create a strong association against the spread of communism in the region.
- In 1976, the members signed the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia which emphasized respect for each other and noninterference in the affairs of their countries.

- In the face of the financial crisis in 1997, the ASEAN members strived to unite their economies and promoted the Chiang Mai Initiative, a currency swap arrangement between ASEAN, China, Japan, and South Korea, to provide financial support to each other and combat currency speculation.
- It has also led diplomatic missions around the world, maintaining a global network of relations with each nation, and has become the driving force of some of the largest economic blocs in world history with the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation and Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership.
- In 2006, ASEAN was granted observer status by the UN General Assembly and in response, it made the UN its dialogue partner.
- ASEAN is recognized by many and is a very important forum for cooperation inside and outside its region and is hailed as the best organization of developing countries in the world.
