Establishment

Definition

An establishment is a unit within a larger organization, typically a business, that operates independently and has its own unique identity. While establishments, firms, and enterprises are related concepts, they differ in scope. Establishments refer to individual locations where business activities occur, such as stores or offices. Firms encompass multiple establishments under shared ownership and management, while enterprises consist of all establishments, subsidiaries, and divisions under the same owner or control, regardless of the same EINs being used.

Business Data Collection and Analysis

Different organizations collect and analyze business data at different levels. The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) uses the establishment level to measure business activity with the Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages (QCEW). On the other hand, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) publishes data at the firm level due to the difficulty of obtaining establishment breakouts for multiunit businesses. Meanwhile, the U.S. Census Bureau gathers establishment-level data every 5 years through the Economic Census, as well as EIN-based data from the IRS.

Establishment Clause of the First Amendment

The Establishment Clause of the First Amendment forbids the federal government from establishing a national church or passing laws that favor one religion over others. It was enacted after America's early settlers came from diverse religious backgrounds and went through various colonial practices regarding religion.

Patterns of Site Establishment

In permaculture design, the establishment of any site goes through different stages. The early years are characterized by abundant experimentation, followed by feedback, then maintenance. This pattern helps designers organize resources, forms of capital, and people's skills more efficiently during the process of establishing sites for various purposes such as education centers.
