Epithelial Tissues Overview

• Epithelial tissues consist of tightly packed cells that line surfaces and cavities throughout the body.
• Different types of epithelial tissue are classified based on cell shape and number of layers.

Simple Squamous Epithelium

• Found in structures such as the kidney's Bowman’s capsule.
• Functions in filtration and diffusion due to its thinness.

Simple Cuboidal Epithelium

• Located in thyroid acini, where it functions in secretion and absorption.
• Characterized by cube-shaped cells.

Simple Columnar Ciliated Epithelium

• Present in the fallopian tubes.
• Cilia facilitate the movement of substances, such as the movement of the ovum.

Pseudostratified Columnar Ciliated Epithelium

• Located in the trachea, giving it a false appearance of multiple layers.
• Contains cilia that help in trapping and expelling particles and pathogens.

Transitional Epithelium

• Found in the ureter and urinary bladder.
• Specialized to stretch and accommodate fluctuating volumes of liquid.

Stratified Squamous Keratinized Epithelium

• Located in the skin, providing a protective barrier.
• Composed of multiple layers of cells, with the outer layer being keratinized for protection against abrasion.

Stratified Squamous Non-Keratinized Epithelium

• Present in the esophagus, where it provides protection against friction.
• Lacks the outer layer of keratin, making it softer compared to keratinized epithelium.
