Study Notes

Epithelial Tissue

  • NOT one of the four basic tissues: Connective tissue, Muscle tissue, Nervous tissue, and NOT Blood
  • Main function of epithelial tissue: forms the lining of organs, glands, and other body surfaces
  • Epithelium is avascular tissue: means it does not have a direct blood supply

Cell Arrangement in Epithelial Tissue

  • In glands: cells are arranged in clusters or acini
  • In epithelial tissue: cells are closely packed and arranged in one or multiple layers
  • In polarized cells: three distinct surface domains: apical, lateral, and basal surfaces

Cell Junctions in Epithelial Tissue

  • Characteristic: intercellular junctions, adherens junctions, and gap junctions
  • Intercellular junctions: hold cells together, maintain tissue integrity, and facilitate cell-cell communication
  • Gap junctions: made up of connexins, allow for direct cell-cell communication
  • Adherens junctions: attach epithelial cells to the basement membrane

Epithelial Tissue Classification

  • Based on the number of layers and the shape of cells
  • Simple epithelium: single layer of flat, cube-shaped, or columnar cells
  • Stratified epithelium: multiple layers of cells
  • Compound epithelium: multiple layers of cells with different shapes

Epithelial Tissue Functions

  • Forms the outermost layer of the skin: epidermis
  • Lines the inside of the mouth and the esophagus: stratified squamous epithelium
  • Basement membrane: separates epithelial tissue from underlying connective tissue
  • Function of compound epithelium: protects underlying tissues
  • Function of stratified epithelium: protects underlying tissues and allows for stretching

Glands and Gap Junctions

  • Exocrine glands: secrete substances through ducts to the surface of the body
  • Endocrine glands: secrete hormones directly into the bloodstream
  • Gap junctions: allow for direct cell-cell communication, composed of connexins

Germ Layers and Epithelial Tissues

  • Epithelial tissues derive from ectoderm and endoderm germ layers
