Enzymes are typically proteins, although some RNA molecules, called ribozymes, can also exhibit catalytic activity. The structure of enzymes allows them to bind to specific molecules, known as substrates, and catalyze chemical reactions. The "lock and key" model proposes that an enzyme's active site is a specific shape, and only the substrate will fit into it, like a lock and key. A newer model, the induced-fit model, suggests that the active site changes shape as it interacts with the substrate, allowing for substrates that are not exact fits to work effectively.
