    Individual Characteristics of an Entrepreneur

    • Three attributes consistently associated with entrepreneurial behavior: need for achievement, internal locus of control, and risk-taking propensity.
    • Need for achievement: personal attribute associated with the expectation of doing something better than others or one's earlier accomplishments.
    • Individuals with high need for achievement have a strong desire for success and are more likely to behave entrepreneurially.
    • Locus of control: belief or disbelief that one can control or influence their environment.
    • Individuals with internal locus of control are more likely to strive for achievement than those with external locus of control.
    • Personal entrepreneurial competencies (PEC): a measuring instrument developed by McClelland in 1985 to measure inclinations among successful entrepreneurs in Malawi, India, and Ecuador.

    Five Personality Dimensions of Entrepreneurs

    • Achievement: high energy levels to chase goals, confidence in achieving success, and measurement of success.
    • Autonomy: need to make decisions without having to abide by someone else's policies, rules, and regulations.
