English Language and Literature

The English language is one of the most widely spoken languages globally. It has its origins traced back to Old English, which was brought to Britain by Anglo-Saxon settlers in the fifth century CE. Since then, it has evolved through several stages, including Middle English and Early Modern English before reaching its current form called Late Modern English. This evolution has been influenced by various sources such as Germanic roots and Latin origins due to Norman Conquest in 1066.

One significant aspect of the English language is its vast vocabulary, estimated to have over 750,000 words, making it quite different from many other European languages like Spanish and French. However, unlike some other languages where grammar is often very strict, English has become more flexible, allowing speakers to adapt their speech patterns according to different situations. For instance, the word 'you' can mean either singular or plural depending on the context.

Literature

Literature written in the English language dates back to around 1000 years ago with the emergence of the Anglo-Saxons, who were known for their epic poetry. Their work included works like Beowulf, which tells the story of Beowulf's battles against Grendel and his mother. Medieval literature emerged between the end of the Roman Empire and 1485, featuring heroic tales, legends and religious texts.

A notable period in English literature history is Romanticism from approximately 1790–1830. During this time, writers focused less on stories and more on exploring personal emotions, leading to increased interest in subjects like nature and imagination. Some famous authors associated with this era include William Wordsworth, Lord Byron, Jane Austen, among others.

In modern times, we see the rise of genres like science fiction, fantasy, young adult books, graphic novels etc., reflecting changing societal norms and aspirations. Authors have continued writing powerful narratives and addressing contemporary issues using poetical devices.

Quaid Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah

Quaid Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah is considered a key figure in the creation of Pakistan due to his leadership during the Muslim League movement from 1940-47. Born into a Parsi family, he converted to Islam later in life. He studied law in England and returned home in 1896. His political career began when he joined the All India Muhammadan Educational Conference in 1906.

Jinnah became the leader of the All-India Muslim League in 1913 after successfully defending the Lahore High Court judge Sir George Cunningham who faced charges related to the murder of two Indians. In 1936, under his leadership, the Muslim League started demanding 'separate homeland for Muslims' as per Two Nation theory. Eventually, in July 1947, both countries, India and Pakistan, were awarded independence.

After India gained Independence, Mountbatten invited him to serve as Governor General of Pakistan. He resigned soon following disagreements over the choice of first prime minister. Later, suffering from tuberculosis, he lost much weight and passed away while asleep from heart failure in September 1948.

Today, millions across South Asia revere the legacy of Jinnah, whose historical role remains debated.
