Present Simple

  • Used to describe:
    • Habits and routines
    • General truths
    • Schedules and timetables
  • Formation:

  • Examples:
    • I wake up at 7:00 am every day.
    • The sun rises in the east.
    • The train leaves at 5:00 pm.

Present Continuous

  • Used to describe:
    • Actions happening at the moment of speaking
    • Temporary or changing situations
    • Trends and developments
  • Formation:
    • Am/Is/Are (linking verb) + present participle (e.g., -ing form)
    • I am writing, you are eating, she is studying
  • Examples:
    • I am studying for my exam right now.
    • The company is expanding its operations in Asia.
    • It is raining outside.

Present Perfect

  • Used to describe:
    • Actions that started in the past and continue up to the present
    • Experiences and achievements
    • Actions with a connection to the present
  • Formation:
    • Has/Have (auxiliary verb) + past participle
    • I have eaten, you have seen, she has written
  • Examples:
    • I have lived in this city for three years.
    • They have been married for 20 years.
    • She has just finished her project.

Note: The present perfect can also be used to describe an action that happened at an unspecified time in the past, but the focus is on its relevance to the present.

Present Simple

  • Used to describe habits and routines, general truths, and schedules and timetables

Present Continuous

  • Used to describe actions happening at the moment of speaking, temporary or changing situations, and trends and developments
  • Formation: Am/Is/Are (linking verb) + present participle (e.g., -ing form)
  • Examples include actions in progress (I am studying for my exam right now), temporary situations (The company is expanding its operations in Asia), and trends (It is raining outside)

Present Perfect

  • Used to describe actions that started in the past and continue up to the present, experiences and achievements, and actions with a connection to the present
  • Formation: Has/Have (auxiliary verb) + past participle
  • Examples include actions that started in the past (I have lived in this city for three years), experiences (They have been married for 20 years), and actions with a connection to the present (She has just finished her project)
