Prepositions

  • A preposition is a word that shows the relationship between a noun or pronoun and other parts of the sentence.
  • Prepositions can indicate location, time, or other relationships.

Types of Prepositions

  • Prepositions of time:
    • In: used for months, years, particular times of a day or month, centuries, and specific times in the past or future.
    • On: used for days, dates, and particular days.
    • At: used for time of a clock, short and precise times, and exact moments.

Examples of Prepositions of Time

  • She was born in 1986.
  • The party will start at 8 PM.
  • The will come here on 15th of January.
  • We will have a party on Friday night.
  • I was very happy on the first day of my job.

Prepositions of Place

  • In: used for a place having some sort of boundary (physical or virtual).
  • On: used for a surface.
  • At: used for a specific place.

Examples of Prepositions of Place

  • They live in England.
  • They place their books on the table.
  • She waited for her kids at the gate of her home.
  • They were running on the road.
  • I met Angelique at the bus stop.

Common Errors in Using Prepositions

  • In vs. into:
    • In is used to describe the place where someone or something is.
    • Into is used to talk about movement, usually with a verb that expresses movement.
