- Students will understand the technology of solar energy and construct simple apparatus
- Students will be able to introduce fossil fuels and describe their uses
- Students will understand the technology of making briquette and bio-gas
- Students will identify alternative energy sources in Nepal and assess their feasibility
Types of Energy
- Energy exists in various forms: heat, light, electrical, chemical, nuclear, kinetic, potential
- Energy is used to perform tasks and operate machines (e.g., cars, buses, trains, airplanes)
- The substance that reacts to produce heat is called fuel
- The SI unit for fuel heating value is J kg⁻¹
- Examples of fuels include: coal, petroleum, solar fuel, nuclear fuel, biomass
Sources of Energy
- Primary Sources: Sources found naturally and used in their original form. Examples include: wood, coal, crude oil, natural gas, dung, solar energy
- Secondary Sources: Sources derived from primary sources. Examples include: coal gas, bio-gas, kerosene, petrol, diesel, charcoal
- Energy sources can be classified as renewable or non-renewable
Non-Renewable Sources
- Accumulate in nature over long periods and cannot be replaced quickly when depleted
- Examples: coal, natural gas, mineral oil, nuclear energy
