End of Life Care
- Families who are fearful need an increased level of support by various members of the interprofessional team.
- Telling the family that the patient has died should be done in an open and honest manner with compassion and support.
Care of the Patient Who is Imminently Dying
- Basic nursing care measures should be provided with a high level of caring and compassion, including:
- Bathing
- Oral care
- Turning and repositioning
- Controlling symptoms
Nearing Death Awareness
- People who are experiencing nearing death awareness may appear confused and report speaking to or seeing already deceased persons.
Postmortem Care
- Be aware of agency policy and state practice guidelines about pronouncement of death.
- Follow any organ donation or autopsy procedures.
- Remove unnecessary items and clean the room.
- Ask the family whether any religious or cultural practices need to be followed during physical care of the body.
Care of the Family at the Time of Death
- Be present and provide collaborative care.
- Allow the family time with the deceased.
- Offer to call for spiritual support.
Bereavement Support
- Assess grief reactions and risk factors for complicated grief.

Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs)
- Acquired as a result of sexual intercourse or other intimate contact with an infected person

- STIs include conditions caused by bacteria, viruses, protozoa, and fungi.
