Ulipristal

  • Taken as a 30 mg single dose as soon as possible after unprotected intercourse
  • Efficacy may be reduced if taken with a CYP3A4 inducer (e.g. phenytoin, St John's wort)
  • Side effects: headache (around 1 in 5 women), nausea (around 1 in 8 women)

Levonorgestrel

  • Taken as a dose of one 1.5 mg tablet as soon as possible after unprotected intercourse
  • Efficacy may be reduced if taken with a CYP3A4 inducer (e.g. phenytoin, St John's wort)
  • Side effects: headache (around 1 in 5 women), nausea (around 1 in 8 women)

Erectile Dysfunction

  • Defined as the persistent inability to achieve or maintain an erection sufficient for satisfactory sexual performance
  • Common condition, prevalence increases with age
  • Associated with conditions such as hypertension, diabetes mellitus, hypercholesterolemia, or cardiovascular disease
  • Purely psychological causes account for 1 in 10 cases

Sildenafil Citrate

  • Phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitor, prevents the breakdown of cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP)
  • No more than one dose of OTC sildenafil is to be taken per day
  • One 50 mg tablet should be taken with water approximately 1 hour before sexual activity
