Design Considerations for Electronic Devices
- Grounding is the reference point of a circuit, where all other points are measured with respect to this point.
- In digital circuits and single rail analog circuits, the ground is the negative terminal of the power supply.
- In analog circuits using dual supply, the ground is the common point of the two supplies, which is accepted as the reference point (zero potential).
Grounding Rules
- Do not use the same conductor (wire or PCB trace) for small analog signal ground and power signal's ground.
- Do not use the same conductor for analog signals and digital signals.
- The analog signal ground, power ground, and digital ground should be connected at a single point (star connection).
PCB Design Considerations
- Use at least two layers board, with one of the layers designated as a ground layer.
- Take into account the manufacturer's recommendations for circuit layout.
- Follow the steps for drawing the layout:
- Give a part number (P/N) to the bare board and the board assembly.
- Define the dimensions of the board.
- Place the mounting holes.
- Place the p/n and Serial Number (S/N) markings on a suitable location on the board.
- Define the locations of the components that interface the board to other assemblies.
- Place the other components for easy routing.
- Place test pads to take measurements during the factory tests.
- Route or auto-route the traces.
- Use a bigger width trace for power connections.
- Prefer at least two layers for the board and use the bottom layer as a ground plane.
- Add sufficient numbers of vias to transfer the heat from one side to the other side for thermal planes.
