Study Notes
Electromagnetism is a subtopic within the field of physics that studies the interactions of electric and magnetic fields. It is a fundamental aspect of the science of charge and the forces and fields associated with charge. Electricity and magnetism are two aspects of electromagnetism, and they were long thought to be separate forces. However, in the 19th century, they were finally treated as interrelated phenomena.
Electromagnetism is concerned with the science of electricity, which is concerned with the behaviour of aggregates of charge, including the distribution of charge within matter and the motion of charge from place to place. Different types of materials are classified as either conductors or insulators on the basis of how they conduct electricity.
Electromagnetism is also concerned with the science of magnetism, which is concerned with the behaviour of magnetic fields and the interactions of magnetic fields with other magnetic fields and with electric fields. The strength of magnetic interactions is in units of Coulombs.
A fundamental aspect of electromagnetism is the Maxwell equations, which are a set of four simple and elegant equations that form the basis of the science. These equations are known as Maxwell equations (1.4), (1.5), (1.6), and (1.7). The Maxwell equations are used to understand the physics captured by each of these equations and how they fit together.
Electromagnetism has many important subtopics, including electromagnets, which are devices that can be used to produce a magnetic field. Electromagnets are used in
