Study Notes
Electromagnetic Waves
- Electromagnetic waves travel at the speed of light (3 x 10⁸ m/s) in a vacuum.
- Wavelength and frequency are inversely related. As wavelength increases, frequency decreases, and vice versa.
- Different types of electromagnetic waves have different wavelengths and frequencies. They are categorized, in order of increasing wavelength (and decreasing frequency) as follows: radio waves, microwaves, infrared, visible light, ultraviolet, X-rays, and gamma rays.
Applications of Electromagnetic Waves
- Radio waves: Broadcasting, communication, radio therapy
- Microwaves: Microwave ovens, communication systems (e.g., mobile phones), radar
- Infrared: Remote controls, night vision goggles, thermal imaging, and heating
- Visible light: Vision, photography
- Ultraviolet: Sterilizing, fluorescent lamps, security markings
- X-rays: Medical imaging, security screening
- Gamma rays: Cancer treatment, sterilization
