EM Spectrum
EM Spectrum
A continuous range of electromagnetic waves ordered by their frequency and wavelength.
EM Waves
EM Waves
Transverse waves that can travel through a vacuum (space). They are composed of oscillating electric and magnetic fields.
Speed of EM Waves

Study Notes
Electromagnetic Spectrum
- Electromagnetic (EM) waves are transverse waves.
- They do not need a medium to travel.
- Composed of electric and magnetic fields.
- Travel at the speed of light (300,000,000 m/s or 3 x 108 m/s).
- Generated by accelerating electrons.
Types of EM Waves (RMIVUXG)
- Radio waves, microwaves, infrared waves, visible light, ultraviolet, X-rays, and gamma rays.
Arrangement of EM Waves
-
Increasing frequency: Radio (R) → Microwave (M) → Infrared (I) → Visible (V) → Ultraviolet (U) → X-ray (X) → Gamma (G)
-
Decreasing frequency: Gamma (G) → X-ray (X) → Ultraviolet (U) → Visible (V) → Infrared (I) → Microwave (M) → Radio (R)
-
Increasing wavelength: Gamma (G) → X-ray (X) → Ultraviolet (U) → Visible (V) → Infrared (I) → Microwave (M) → Radio (R)
-
Decreasing wavelength: Radio (R) → Microwave (M) → Infrared (I) → Visible (V) → Ultraviolet (U) → X-ray (X) → Gamma (G)
-
Frequency and wavelength are inversely proportional. Higher frequency means shorter wavelength, and vice versa.
Applications of EM Waves
- Radio Waves: Radio and TV communication
- Microwaves: Satellite communication, radar, cooking
- Infrared Waves: Remote controls, thermal imaging, night vision
- Visible Light: Artificial lighting, optics, screens
- Ultraviolet: Sterilization, fluorescence
- X-rays: Medical imaging, industrial applications
- Gamma Rays: Cancer treatment (radiotherapy)
Infrared Waves and Temperature
- Cooler temperatures appear blue and green.
- Warmer temperatures appear red and yellow.
Visible Spectrum
- Consists of colors ROYGBIV (Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo, Violet).
- Red has the longest wavelength.
- Violet has the shortest wavelength.
X-rays
- Discovered by Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen in 1895.
