    Study Notes

    Grounded Conductors

    • Grounded conductors are identified by a continuous white or gray outer finish, or three continuous white stripes along its entire length, except for green insulation.
    • Conductors larger than 14 mm² require an additional distinctive white or gray marking at the termination.
    • Flexible cords with a white or gray outer finish are grounded.
    • Ensure grounded conductors for different systems are distinguishable, one having white and the other gray outer finish.

    Branch Circuits

    Rating

    • Branch circuits, excluding individual branch circuits, have ratings of 15, 20, 30, 40, and 50A.
    • Multi-outlet branch circuits exceeding 50A are permitted to supply non-lighting outlet loads.

Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) Protection

    • Dwelling units require GFCI protection for 125/250 volts, single phase, 15-20 amperes receptacles in various locations, including bathrooms, garages, outdoors, crawl spaces, unfinished basements, kitchens, laundry circuits, wet bar sinks, and boathouses.
    • Other buildings like commercial and institutional kitchens, rooftops, and public outdoor areas require GFCI protection for similar receptacles.
    • GFCI protection is mandatory for 125/250 volts, 15-20 ampere receptacles in boat hoists.

    Arc-Fault Circuit Interrupter (AFCI)

    • AFCI devices detect arcing faults and de-energize the circuit for safety.
    • In dwelling unit bedrooms, all 115V and/or 230V, single phase, 15 and 20A circuits require AFCI protection.

    Branch Circuit Ratings

Conductors - Minimum Ampacity and Size

    • Branch circuit conductors must have an ampacity not less than the maximum load served.
    • Continuous loads require 125% ampacity.
    • Household ranges of 8% kW or more need a minimum branch circuit rating of 40 amperes.
    • Other loads, excluding cooking and heating appliances, require conductors not smaller than 2.0 mm².

Branch Circuits Requiring 20A Overcurrent Protection

    • Small appliance, laundry, bathroom, and dwelling unit (50 m² not exceeding 3680VA) branch circuits require at least 20A overcurrent protection.

    Permissible Loads

    • Specific loads are allowed on different branch circuits based on their rating.
    • 15-20 Ampere: Lighting Units, utilization equipment fastened in place, or a combination of both.
    • 30 Ampere: Fixed lighting units with heavy-lampholders, excluding utilization equipment.
    • 40-50 Ampere: Cooking appliances fastened in place.
    • Branch circuits larger than 50 Amperes: Non-lighting outlet loads only.

    Receptacle Outlets

    • Receptacles should be installed within 1800 mm horizontally from each other in habitable rooms like kitchens, living rooms, bedrooms, and recreation areas.
    • Outlets must be installed on wall spaces wider than 600 mm, excluding space measured around corners.
    • Floor receptacles are only counted if they are 450 mm away from the wall.

    Countertop Outlets

    • Kitchens and dining rooms require receptacle outlets within 600 mm of counter spaces 300 mm or wider.
    • Island or peninsula counter spaces with long dimensions of 600 mm or greater and short dimensions of 300 mm or greater require at least one outlet.
    • Outlets should be located above the countertop but not more than 500 mm high.

    Bathroom Outlets

    • At least one receptacle is required within 900 mm from the outside edge of each basin.

    Outdoor Outlets

    • Single-family dwellings and individual units require at least one accessible outlet at grade level within 2000 mm of the front and back of the dwelling unit.

    Laundry Area Outlets

    • At least one receptacle is required for laundry.

    Basement and Garage Outlets

    • At least one outlet is required in basements and garages.

    Hallway Outlets

    • Dwelling units with hallways 3000 mm (3m) or longer need at least one receptacle outlet.

    Show Window Outlets

    • At least one receptacle directly above for each 3600 mm linear width.

Heating, Air-Conditioning, and Refrigeration Equipment Outlets

    • These require individual outlets on the same level within 7600 mm of the equipment.

    Lighting Outlets Required

    • Habitable rooms
    • Hallways, stairways, attached garages, detached garages with electric power
    • Attached and detached garages
    • Interior stairways (six risers or more)
    • Storage and equipment spaces
    • Guest rooms or guest suites
