Study Notes
Alternating Current (AC)
- Continually changes direction of its currents.
- Negative and then positive which alternates again.
- Used in most household appliances.
Fuse
- Safety device that "blows" or melts if current exceeds a specified value.
- Protects electrical circuits.
Lamp
- Converts electrical energy to light energy.
Switch
- Controls the flow of current.
- Allows current to flow only in the closed position.
Resistor
- Restricts the flow of current.
- Used to limit the current passing through an LED.
Potentiometer
- Controls the current that flows through a component.
- Can be used to adjust the brightness of a lamp.
Diode
- Allows current to flow in only one direction.
Light Emitting Diode (LED)
- Converts electrical energy into light energy.
Voltmeter
- Used to measure voltage.
- Also known as potential difference.
Cells and Batteries
- Supply electrical energy.
- Batteries are more than one cell joined together.
- Larger terminal indicates the positive (+) side.
Direct Current (DC)
- Always flows in one direction.
- Used in many electronic devices.
Ammeter
- Used to measure the current flowing through a circuit.
- Measures in amps.
Galvanometer
- Very sensitive meter used to measure small currents (usually 1mA or less).
Capacitor
- Stores electrical energy.
Circuit
- A circular path or route that follows a curved course and finishes at the point at which it began.
Drawing Circuits
- Use a ruler to draw connecting wires in straight lines.
- Draw components correctly.
- Don't leave gaps in a circuit diagram unless it is meant to be incomplete.
- Draw dots to show two wires joined together.
Series Circuit
- Electrons move along the same path through one component, then another, and so on.
- Current is the same throughout the circuit.
- Total resistance is the sum of individual resistances.
- If one component fails, the entire circuit breaks.
Parallel Circuit
- Electrons have multiple paths to flow through.
- Voltage is the same across each component.
- Total resistance is less than the smallest individual resistance.
- If one component fails, the other components continue to work.
