Definition of Electric Potential and Its Relationship with Electric Fields

The concept of electric potential is central to understanding electrostatic phenomena. It's a measure of the work done by an external agency to bring a unit positive charge from some reference point (usually taken as infinity) to another point against the force of attraction of the electric field. In other words, it quantifies how much energy must be put into moving an electron from one place to another, given the distribution of charges around those two points and the forces they exert upon each other. Therefore, when we talk about electric potential, we refer to the amount of electrical work necessary to move a test charge between two points within an electric circuit.

What Is Electric Potential?

In a nutshell, electric potential measures the ability of an object to do work because of its electric state; more specifically, it indicates where the electric potential difference is high for this kind of work. This can be thought of as 'elevated' in terms of electricity—just like water can have elevated pressure above ground level due to gravity. So if you increase your altitude while still carrying the same mass, you need less fuel per kilometer traveled. Similarly, when you raise an object upwards using a spring, you store more elastic potential energy in the spring. When you lower it again, you release that stored energy and cause it to fall under gravitational pull.

Why Does Electric Potential Exist?

At any instant, an isolated body will always have the greatest possible mechanical effect on anything else near it which has similar properties. Therefore, there must exist something like gravitation or magnetization or electrization to bind the bodies together. They create the electric potential difference which gives rise to electric potential energy, just as the weight of the earth gives us our normal experience. So, electric potential exists primarily because objects carry charge, whether it's charged particles inside them or the overall charges associated with their surfaces.

An electric potential difference occurs whenever the electrostatic energy changes. Likewise, an electric current only flows if there is a change in electric potential energy. If there were no such differences, then nothing would happen! There could simply be unchanging physical situations, one after another, forever. Because the electric potential difference causes work to be done, there is a relationship between electric potential and power—the rate at which work is being done. For example, consider a system consisting of three resistors connected in series, where each resistor holds a voltage across itself. In order for a flow of current to occur, the voltages at each end of every resistor must be different. Thus, the total voltage across all three resistors equals the sum of the individual voltages.

Measurement Of Electric Potential Difference And Electric Potential Energy

To calculate the electric potential difference between two points A and B, you need to know the work required to take a small (but finite) quantity of charge from point A to B against the force of the electric field. That means measuring the work done when moving one test charge through the potential difference. On the other hand, the electric potential energy is calculated by multiplying the charge of the particle by the electric potential difference. Together these quantities describe what happens when you move a charge around inside the electric field created by the field sources.
