- Early Experience: Playwright recounts childhood experience of walking to the corner store and trying to blend in with dominant culture to avoid detection by immigration officers.
- 1987 Simpson-Rodino Amnesty Law: Granted legal residency to undocumented people who entered the U.S. since 1982, offering an opportunity for a better life. Still, many people hesitated due to distrust of the government.
- Inspiration for the Play: Playwright's experiences working at her sister's sewing factory, which featured a diverse group of older Latina women, inspired REAL WOMEN HAVE CURVES.
