What is Demography?
- Demography is the scientific study of human populations.
- A population is a collection of persons alive at a specified point in time who meet certain criteria, e.g. the population of Malaysia on June 30, 2016.
- The term "demography" comes from the Greek words "demos" (people) and "graphein" (to write about), meaning "description of the people".
- Demography was first defined by Belgian statistician Achille Guillard in 1855 as "the mathematical knowledge of populations, their general movements, and their physical, civil, intellectual and moral state".
Modern Demography
- Modern demography studies the determinants and consequences of population change.
- It is concerned with various aspects of population, including:
