  • Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was born on October 2, 1869, in the coastal town of Porbandar, Gujarat, India.
  • He trained as a lawyer and began practicing in 1891, but found little success in India.
  • In 1915, Gandhi returned to India and began to lead campaigns for civil rights and freedom.
  • He became the leader of the Indian National Congress in 1921 and led nationwide campaigns for easing poverty, expanding womens rights, building religious and ethnic amity, ending untouchability, and achieving swaraj or self-rule.
  • In 1930, Gandhi led a march of Indians against a salt tax, and in 1942 he called for the British to leave India.
  • In 1947, Britain granted independence to India and the British Indian Empire was partitioned into two dominions, a Hindu-majority India and a Muslim-majority Pakistan.
  • Gandhi refused to celebrate independence, instead visiting areas affected by religious violence.
  • In 1948, Gandhi began a hunger strike to pressure India to pay out some cash assets owed to Pakistan. He completed it in January 1948, aged 78.
  • After independence, Gandhi continued to lead campaigns for social justice and peaceful resistance. He died in 1948, aged 80.
