Curriculum Details
- The MATATAG curriculum aims to reduce the amount of competencies from the previous curriculum. It focuses on developing foundational literacy, numeracy, and socio-emotional skills.
- MATATAG is implemented in phases, starting with Kindergarten, Grades 1, 4, and 7 in SY 2024-2025. The curriculum rollout continues in the subsequent school years.
Background
- Recent assessments show Filipino learners exhibiting weak performance, highlighting potential issues in the K to 12 curriculum.
- Identified issues in the curriculum include overloaded teaching demands/excessive curriculum demands, constraints in timeframes, and over-whelming academic loads, which in turn hinders students' ability to master/develop fundamental skills like simple math and reading.
- The MATATAG initiative, under former Education Secretary Sara Z. Duterte, addresses these challenges, prioritizing literacy and numeracy skill development.
