Ecuador: A Country in Focus

Ecuador, located in northwestern South America, has seen significant changes over the years in various aspects of its society and environment. One of the pressing concerns is urban security. According to research, Ecuador experienced its most violent year in 2022, with a homicide rate of 25.6%, making the littoral city of Guayaquil particularly challenging due to rising criminal governance and firepower. Despite previous perceptions of Ecuador as a peaceful region, the security situation has deteriorated rapidly, requiring urgent attention and measures.

In addition to security matters, Ecuador is strengthening its ties with science to address sustainable development. The country lacked a science academy until recently, when the Academy of Sciences of Ecuador (ACE) was established in 2013. Since its launch, ACE has grown to include 25 new members, bringing together experts in various fields such as basic and applied life sciences, earth sciences, mathematics, physics, chemistry, and social sciences. This academy is crucial for promoting research and developing science in Ecuador, contributing to its growth and progress.

Health research in Ecuador has also seen significant improvements in recent times. From 2006 to 2015, the country published 6,548 scientific articles, with the most popular areas being agriculture/biological sciences and medicine. The Revolución Ciudadana implemented policies and interventions aimed at raising Ecuador's health research output, leading to a notable increase in scientific activity in the health sector. While there is still room for improvement in addressing the country's health priorities, the efforts made have been substantial.

Another aspect of Ecuador's progress relates to conservation biology. Researchers like Andrea Terán-Valdez are working on protecting endangered frog species, including breeding populations and cataloging new species. This is a vital effort given the biodiversity of Ecuador and the threats faced by its wildlife.

Overall, Ecuador is facing complex challenges in various sectors, but also actively pursues solutions through initiatives such as science academies, improved health research, and conservation efforts. These endeavors aim to enhance the well-being of its citizens and safeguard its natural heritage.
