- Development is seen as a broad change in the entire social system, focusing on the diverse needs and changing aspirations of people and groups to ensure a transition from an unfavorable to a more desirable living condition.

- Wealth: high income
- Freedom: ability to make choices
- Knowledge: quality education
Measurement of a Country's Development according to the United Nations
- Human Development Index (HDI) is used to measure the overall capacity of a country to provide its citizens with a long and healthy life, access to knowledge, and a decent standard of living.
Human Development Index (HDI)
- Health: measured by life expectancy at birth
- Education: measured by mean years of schooling and expected years of schooling
- Standard of Living: measured by gross national income per capita
Importance of HDI
- Focuses on people's capabilities and well-being as the primary measure of a country's development, not just economic growth.
- Aims to provide a wide range of choices for people to fulfill their needs.
Sectors of the Economy
- Primary (agriculture): production of food and raw materials
- Secondary (industry): processing of raw materials, construction, mining, and manufacturing
- Tertiary (services): supports the entire production, distribution, trade, and consumption of goods within or outside the country, including transportation, communication, finance, trade, and tourism.
Concept of Development
- Development is a progressive process of improving human condition, reducing poverty, unemployment, inequality, and exploitation.
- Development is different from wealth, as development focuses on improving the quality of life and freedom of choice, while wealth is just an increase in income or wealth.
Two Contrasting Concepts of Development
- Traditional View: development is seen as increasing per capita income or a country's GNP and GDP.
