6 Questions

What is the main function of the left ventricle?

To deliver oxygenated blood to the rest of the body

Where does the right ventricle pump blood to?

Lungs

What causes ventricular contraction/depolarization?

Signal traveling through the Bundle of His and Purkinje Fibers

What records the electrical signals in the heart?

Electrocardiogram (ECG)

What is the role of the atria in the heart?

Receiving and pumping blood to the ventricles

Description

Signal travels down to the ventricles through the Bundle of His and finally to the Purkinje Fibers causing Ventricular contraction/depolarization followed by the relaxation of the ventricles. If there is an issue in this system we can have arrhythmia like Afib, AF, SVT etc. Understanding normal cardiac anatomy and physiology is an important component of performing ACLS. The heart is a hollow muscle comprised of four chambers surrounded by thick walls of tissue (septum). The atria are the two upper chambers and the ventricles are the two lower chambers. The left and right halves of the heart work together to pump blood throughout the body. On the RIGHT side ( Takes blood RIGHT to the lungs )-The right atrium (RA) and the right ventricle (RV) pump deoxygenated blood to the lungs where it becomes oxygenated. On the LEFT side ( Gets blood that LEFT the Lungs )-This oxygen-rich blood returns to the left atrium (LA) and then enters the left ventricle (LV). The LV is the main pump that delivers the newly oxygenated blood to the rest of the body. CONDUCTION SYSTEM ANATOMY ECG (ELECTROCARDIOGRAM) An electrocardiogram records the electrical signals in the heart.

Study Notes

Heart Function

  • The left ventricle pumps oxygenated blood from the lungs to the rest of the body.
  • The right ventricle pumps oxygen-depleted blood from the body to the lungs.

Regulation of Heartbeat

  • Ventricular contraction, or depolarization, is caused by electrical impulses from the sinoatrial (SA) node.
  • The electrocardiogram (ECG or EKG) records the electrical signals in the heart.

Atria Function

  • The atria, or upper chambers, receive blood returning to the heart and contract to push blood into the ventricles.

Test your knowledge of basic ECG reading and interpretation as well as the anatomy of the heart with this quiz. Explore the signal flow through the heart and its role in ventricular contraction and depolarization. Ideal for nursing students and healthcare professionals studying care for clients with life-threatening conditions and acute multi-organ problems.
