Print's Meaningfulness

Children's awareness of print as a tool for conveying meaning grows through exposure to books, adults reading, and their own writing experiences.

Foundation for Conventional Reading

Early experiences with print, like shared reading and exploration, set the stage for children to eventually learn to read and write conventionally.

Copying Words

A child writes by copying words from resources like books, posters, or charts. The writing shows an understanding of letter formation and the concept of words.

Drawing and String of Letters

A child writes random letters to convey a message. Letters are formed well but bear no relation to sounds. The writer understands that print and art convey meaning.

Early Phonetic Writing

A child writes words using mainly consonants to represent words and sounds. Writing shows individuality, focuses on a topic, and makes sense.

Phonetic Writing

A child writes words using letters for each sound heard. Words make sense and can be used for longer texts.
