The Earth's Interior
The Earth's interior is a complex and dynamic system consisting of four main layers: the outer core, inner core, mantle, and crust. Each of these layers has distinct characteristics, including density, temperature, and physical properties, which contribute to the overall functioning of the planet.
Outer Core
The outer core is the second layer from the surface and extends roughly from 2,200 kilometers to the inner core at approximately 5,150 kilometers deep. It is primarily composed of liquid iron, with small amounts of nickel and other trace elements. The outer core plays a crucial role in generating the Earth's magnetic field, which protects life on the planet from harmful solar radiation.
Inner Core
Located at the center of the Earth, the inner core is the smallest and densest layer, extending from about 5,150 kilometers down to the very center. Approximately 125 kilometers deep, it is almost entirely composed of a solid inner sphere of iron, surrounded by a smaller liquid outer sphere. Despite being extremely hot, the inner core maintains its solid state due to high pressures, which prevent the iron from melting.
Mantle
The mantle is the largest layer in the Earth, occupying the region between the crust and the core, extending from approximately 20 kilometers beneath the crust to about 2,200 kilometers deep. It consists of semi-fluid rock called peridotite, which is mainly composed of olivine and pyroxene. Crust
