    Study Notes

    • The Earth is the only natural satellite of our planet, and it is the third largest planet in the Solar System.
    • The Earth is called the Blue planet since two-thirds of its surface is covered by water.
    • The Earth has four major components, or realms: Lithosphere, Hydrosphere, Atmosphere, and Biosphere.
    • The Lithosphere is the solid outer layer of the Earth, consisting of rocks and soils.
    • The Hydrosphere includes all of the Earth's water bodies, such as oceans, seas, rivers, lakes, and ice caps.
    • The Atmosphere is the layer of gas that surrounds the Earth and is made up of various gases, including nitrogen (78%) and oxygen (21%).
    • The Biosphere is the realm of life and includes all living organisms on Earth, in the water, and in the air.
    • The Moon is the only natural satellite of the Earth and is about one-quarter the size of the Earth.
    • The Moon takes approximately 27 days to orbit the Earth and has mountains, plains, and depressions on its surface.
    • Man-made satellites are artificial bodies designed to gather information about the universe and the Earth for communication.
    • The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) launches satellites into space from its launching station at Sriharikota.
    • Asteroids are small rocky objects that move around the Sun and are found between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter.
    • Meteoroids are small pieces of rocky or metallic bodies that can drop upon the Earth and, upon entering the atmosphere, burn up and create a flash of light.
    • Comets are celestial objects made up of a head and a tail. The head consists of solid particles held together by ice, and the tail is made of gases.
    • A galaxy is a huge cluster of stars, and our Solar System is a part of the Milky Way or Galaxy.
    • The Universe contains millions of galaxies.
