Study Notes
Earth Science is a branch of natural sciences that focuses on understanding our planet's features such as its oceans, atmosphere, landforms, rocks, etc. This discipline encompasses various fields including geology, meteorology, oceanography, astronomy, seismology, atmospheric physics, biogeochemistry, hydrology, and environmental studies. It involves studying how these different aspects interact with each other, leading to specific phenomena like climate change, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, hurricanes, tsunamis, global warming, and ice ages.
One aspect of Earth Science deals with geological processes which can take millions of years to form certain rock types and structures. An example would be sedimentary rocks, formed by layers of waterborne debris settling over time into rock. There are also igneous rocks, those formed from heated minerals within the Earth; intrusive, where hot magma cools deep below ground level before rising towards the surface; extrusive, when lava cools outside the crust - examples being granite and basalt respectively. Metamorphic rocks come from heat and pressure acting upon existing rocks beneath the Earth's surface.
In terms of weather, it's all part of the study of meteorology–the atmosphere's temperature distribution, humidity, wind speed & direction, atmospheric stability, cloud formation, precipitation, thunderstorms, cyclones, tornadoes, blizzards and many more phenomena. Oceanographers focus on understanding marine life, currents underwater topography, salinity gradients, thermal conditions, waves, tides, sea floor structure, coral reefs...basically anything related to living things found near shorelines around world! Astronomical aspects pertain mainly toward celestial bodies behavior during their revolution about sun; moon orbiting earth while stars shine bright up high above sky.
Seismologists deal specifically with vibrations released whenever there's movement along fault lines producing quakes big enough feel far away places too. Atmospheric physicists concentrate primarily how air molecules behave inside Earth's envelope trying figure out what makes clouds turn rainy daytime or clear night time? Biogeochemistry involves chemistry within ecosystems alive organisms & cycle nutrients through them while hydrologists examine flow properties liquids pass us down hillside creek bed stream river valley lake.
Environmental studies usually tie together several disciplines above making sure people realize importance preserving precious resources like clean air/water/soil sustainable practices possible future generations prosperity enjoy healthy lifestyleEnvironments today go hand-in-hand public awareness ecology conservationism government policies promote environmental protection globally.
