    Study Notes

    Ear Structure and Function

    • Ear is an organ of hearing and maintaining body equilibrium
    • It is located within the temporal bone
    • Composed of three parts: external, middle, and internal ear

    External Ear (Auricle/Pinna)

    • Visible on the surface
    • Composed of a single, folded plate of elastic cartilage
    • Covered by skin
    • Lowest part (lobule) is soft and fatty
    • Remainder of the auricle includes: helix, antihelix, concha, tragus, and scaphoid fossa
    • The concha leads into external acoustic meatus (EAM)

    Nerve Supply

    • Lateral Surface:
      • Upper 2/3: Auriculotemporal nerve
      • Lower 1/3: Great auricular nerve
    • Medial Surface:
      • Upper 2/3: Lesser occipital nerve
      • Lower 1/3: Great auricular nerve
    • Root: Auricular branch of the vagus nerve

    Blood Supply

    • Derived from superficial temporal arteries
    • Lymphatics drain into periauricular and postauricular lymph nodes

    Muscles

    • Muscles are vestigial in humans
