  • Watching the muzzle
  • Checking for obstructions
  • Knowing the target and surroundings before shooting
  • Unloading guns when not in use
  • Never pointing a gun at something you don't intend to shoot
  • Avoiding loaded guns when climbing or jumping
  • Not shooting at hard surfaces or water

Choke Types

• Four kinds of chokes:
  • Full choke
  • Modified choke
  • Improved cylinder choke
  • Cylinder bore/no choke

Cartridge Parts

• Rimfire cartridge consists of:
  • Bullet
  • Brass case
  • Powder
  • Rim/primer
• Centerfire cartridge consists of:
  • Bullet
  • Brass case
  • Smokeless powder
  • Primer

Shotgun Shell Composition

• Five parts of a shotgun shell:
  • Shot
  • Plastic case
  • Wad

Hunter Safety Practices

• Do not carry a loaded firearm in or on a vehicle or horse.
• When hunting, maintain a distance of 25 to 40 feet apart to ensure visibility and safety.
• Hunters' zones of fire encompass an approximate 45° angle.

Shooting Safety Guidelines

• Avoid shooting at flat hard surfaces to prevent ricochets.
• Do not shoot at skyline animals, as visibility of the area beyond the animal is compromised.
• The safest shot at game animals is typically a quartering-away shot.

Hunting Laws and Ethics

• Reasons for hunting laws include:
  • Safety
  • Fair chase
  • Opportunity and fair share
  • Wildlife protection and conservation
• Ethical considerations involve doing what is right, adhering to personal and societal values regarding hunting practices.

Responsible Hunting

• Hunters bear responsibility for themselves, fellow hunters, landowners, and natural resources.
• The first three steps when picking up a firearm include:
  • Keeping the muzzle pointed safely.
  • Checking if the firearm is loaded.
  • Turning on the safety mechanism.

• Do not consume alcohol or drugs before or during shooting or hunting activities.
