E-Cigarettes
- E-cigarettes are devices that heat a liquid to produce an aerosol.
- The aerosol is not just water vapor, it usually contains other harmful chemicals and flavorings.
- E-cigarettes are also known as e-cigs, e-hookahs, mods, vape pens, vapes, and tank systems.
- They come in a variety of shapes and sizes, some looking like regular cigarettes, cigars, or pipes, and some resembling USB flash drives, pens, and other everyday items.
- Vaping is the act of inhaling and exhaling the aerosol produced by an e-cigarette.
- E-cigarette liquids are flavored and often contain nicotine, glycerin, propylene glycol, vitamins, essential oils, and even leaf marijuana or THC oil/wax.
Reasons People Vape
- Curiosity, peer pressure, friends and family vaping, flavors, vaping tricks, the perception that vaping is less harmful than traditional tobacco products, the ease of access, discretion, and a desire to quit tobacco products are all cited as reasons people vape.
Cigarettes vs. E-Cigarettes
- Cigarette smoke contains over 7,000 chemicals, including known cancer-causing compounds and hundreds of other toxins.
- E-cigarette aerosol contains nicotine, ultrafine particles that can be inhaled deep into the lungs, flavorings such as diacetyl (linked to serious lung disease), volatile organic compounds, cancer-causing chemicals, and heavy metals such as nickel, tin, and lead.
- It’s difficult for consumers to determine exactly what e-cigarette products contain. Even e-cigarettes marketed as nicotine-free have been found to contain nicotine.
Nicotine and E-Cigarettes
- Nicotine is the addictive drug found in cigarettes, cigars, and other tobacco products.
- 99% of e-cigarettes sold contain nicotine, and some vape product labels don’t disclose its presence.
Nicotine Dangers

- Nicotine can affect parts of the brain that control attention, learning, mood, and impulse control.

- Most explosions occur while the e-cigarette battery is being charged.
- People have been poisoned by swallowing, breathing, or absorbing e-cigarette liquid through their skin.
E-Cigarettes and Young People
- Like cigarette companies, e-cigarette companies have targeted young people, aiming to create a lifetime customer base by attracting them early.
