Study Notes

Dysphagia

  • Dysphagia is a sign of difficulty swallowing
  • Signs of dysphagia include coughing, choking, or gagging while eating or drinking
  • Causes of dysphagia can be divided into three categories: oropharyngeal, esophageal, and neuromuscular

Oropharyngeal Dysphagia

  • Oropharyngeal dysphagia is a disease of the oropharynx
  • Signs of oral dysphagia include difficulty manipulating food, drooling, and inability to initiate swallowing
  • Signs of pharyngeal dysphagia include coughing, choking, or gagging during swallowing, and halitosis
  • Pharyngeal dysphagia can manifest as nasal regurgitation, difficulty swallowing, or feelings of food sticking in the throat

Cricopharyngeal Dysphagia

  • Cricopharyngeal dysphagia occurs when the cricopharyngeus muscle fails to relax or contract
  • Signs of cricopharyngeal dysphagia include difficulty swallowing, regurgitation, and sensation of food sticking in the throat

Other Conditions

  • Odynophagia is a condition characterized by painful swallowing
  • Halitosis is bad breath
  • Drooling is an excessive flow of saliva
  • Conditions that can cause dysphagia in the oropharynx include neuromuscular disorders, such as Parkinson's disease
  • Conditions that can cause dysphagia in the esophagus include achalasia and diffuse esophageal spasm
  • The most common cause of physiological dysphagia is gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)
  • Congenital conditions that can cause dysphagia include cleft palate and Pierre Robin syndrome
  • Conditions that can cause 'rubber jaw' and dysphagia include myasthenia gravis
