Study Notes
Turn Signals and Arm Signals
- Turn signals must be used when pulling away from the curb, turning, or changing lanes.
- For a left turn, utilize the left signal light or extend the left arm straight out the window.
- To signal a left turn, point the left arm straight out the left window.
- For a right turn, use the right signal light or raise the left arm straight up (forming an L).
Slowing and Stopping Signals
- Activate brake lights to signal slowing or stopping; alternatively, point the arm straight down out the left window.
Rules on Passing
- Passing is prohibited if road lines indicate so, there are two or more lanes in each direction, or within 100 feet of intersections, railroad crossings, hills, curves, bridges, or tunnels.
Highway Passing Guidelines
- Avoid passing when within 100 feet of an intersection or railroad crossing, or near hills or curves.
Lane Usage
- Stay right unless passing on a two or three-lane street, driving on a one-way street, or if the right side of the road is closed.
Steps to Pass on a 2-Lane Road
- First ensure clarity by checking rearview and side mirrors and signaling left.
- Look for “no passing zones” and ensure enough time to return before oncoming traffic is within 200 feet.
- Tap the horn if necessary while passing.
- Pass on the left and return to the lane once the vehicle is visible in the rearview mirror.
- Signal right before returning to the original lane, and remember to turn the signal off.
Passing on the Right
- In Texas, passing on the right is allowed when the road is clear of parked cars and wide enough, on a one-way road, or on a paved shoulder if the front vehicle is disabled, turning left, or slowed.
- Avoid passing on the right in unpaved areas.
Considerations When Being Passed
- Maintain speed, stay in your lane, and move right if passed on the left side of an unmarked road. Aim to provide ample space for the passing driver.
Turning Protocol
- Decide on the turn before reaching the intersection to avoid danger.
- Use mirrors to check for cars in the turn lane before switching lanes and enter the turning lane well in advance.
- Signal at least 100 feet before turning; if using arm signals, transition to both hands on the wheel for the turn.
- Slow down to a reasonable speed while turning, and avoid using brakes or clutch during the maneuver.
